Tow Bar Basics
If you wish to tow a trailer, caravan or securley fit a bike carrier to your vehicle you will need a tow bar. If the towed trailer or bike carrier obscures any of your vehicles rear lights or number plate you will also need tow bar electrics to power a light board or the trailers lights. Most vehicles are built with tow bar mounting points which means you can fit a tow bar kit. The kit will comprise of all the fittings and load bars needed to install it.
Each vehicle has a maximum permitted towing weight as does each tow bar kit. Some vehicles however, are not suitable for towing even if there is a kit available. This is not because they do not have tow bar mounting points but because the vehicles engine, cooling, exhaust or gear box are not up to the job. To check your vehicles suitability look in the owners handbook or contact your car dealer.
Tow bars are generally available in a flange or swan neck type which have certain disadvantages and benefits. To save a lot of time and money it is worth considering them prior to placing an order.
Tow Bar Types
To decide on the best type of tow bar to fit, consider what you may want to tow not only now but also in the future. Changing or adding to the original tow bar installation can add considerable expense.
Swan neck tow bars are available in fixed and detachable design for most towing capable vehicles and are suitable for all hitch types (some caravans have friction hitches for example).
The main advantage of a detachable is that the tow ball is designed to be easily detached when not needed removing the trip hazard and improving the sight lines of your car. Detachable tow bars come in either a vertical (U shaped neck) or horizontal (L shaped neck) with the vertical type offering an invisible installation. The fixed Swan neck towbar however, will often be the most affordable towbar option.
The flange towbar is the most common and versatile tow bar type, this is because it offers all the benefits of a Swan neck as well as being suitable for fitting other tow ball types and tow bar mounted accessories such as steps, bolt on bike carriers and bumper protection plates. If you want maximum flexibility and future proofing on your tow bar purchase a (fixed - most are) flange tow bar is the one to order.
Tow Bar Fitting
DIY fitting is very possible as there is nothing really complicated about fitting a tow bar to 95% of vehicles, particularly for some one with auto mechanical or engineering experience. Some vehicles will need to have the rear bumper, crash beam, spare wheel and/or exhaust lowered, or temporarily removed to enable fitting. Rarily, some drilling out of fixings points may be needed and perhaps the biggest hurdle on older vehicles is the removing of seized bolts or fittings. On other vehicles it is as simple as attaching two side arms to the chassis and a crossbeam to these side arms before torquing up the 10 or so bolts that hold all the parts together. Fitting instuctions can be found in the product listings on this website and downloaded prior to ordering if more vehicle specific information is needed.
